Things I did not know of the day: Jewish Author Was Behind Black Kids’ Books: Jewish Author Exra Jack Keats wrote and illustrated more than 20 children’s books, most featuring African-American children, at a time when that was unheard of. His work is now the subject of an exhibit ,The Snowy Day and the Art of Ezra Jack Keats. I remember these books as a kid. Funny, I never owned one - I didn’t have many books that featured black characters, or even written by black authors until I was a teen.

The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams | 14 Books That Traumatized You As A Kid
One of my favorite books as a kid! The Velveteen Rabbit Written by Margery Williams and Illustrated by William Nicholson
My favorite passage on love. From the Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams. “What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?” “Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.” “Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. “Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.” “Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?” “It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

"Tar Beach" by Faith Ringgold Example of magical realism and memoir. Ringgold also integrates New York, African American history post Depression. Makes reference to labor and race in the 1940s. It recounts the dream adventure of eight-year-old Cassie Louise Lightfoot, who flies above her apartment-building rooftop, the 'tar beach' of the title, looking down on 1939 Harlem. Use it to teach about northern side of race and the depression.

Poetry- I put this book on my wish list because I feel it is important to highlight poetry from someone of a different race and for my students to be exposed to poetry from all different kind of people. Langston Hughes wrote poems about Civil Rights which can also be tied into a history lesson in the classroom as well.

Let It Shine by Ashley Bryan (Picture Story Book-Coretta Scott King Award) This is a wonderful book that is full of color illustrations. It covers three well known kid's spirtual songs; This little light of mine, oh, when the saints go marching in and he's got the whole world in his hands. It also provides the sheet music for them. It has a page that talks about the history of the songs (wrote by slaves) and it would be a good way to bring up slaves in history or how tradition is important.

Tiki and Ronde were each other's best friends. Together from the start, these twins might not have been the strongest or the tallest, but they were fast and worked hard at what they loved. And they loved sports, especially football. Then one day Tiki badly hurt his knee in a biking accident, and he was sure he'd never be able to play again.
