    1910’s Vintage Leather Football Shoulder Pads by Reach. The offered vintage football shoulder pads were made by the A.J. Reach Sporting Goods Company from Philadelphia, PA. They are a wonderful example of the bare minimum pads that were worn by football players from this era. Some still chose not to wear any pads at all! This particular pair has survived nearly a decade in amazingly excellent condition. The leather remains soft and supple and the compressed felt padding is also nearly perfect. B

Man’s football uniform, c. 1910 The maroon rib-knit wool sweater, padded gold canvas pants and brown leather helmet were probably worn by Robert Lane McCrady (1888-1945) at the College of Charleston. The pants have a front fly with metal grommets for lacing. Pads are sewn inside front and back hips and front at knees. Thigh fronts have inserted vertical rods, probably wood. The helmet is lined with cotton batting. Gift of the Estate of Emily S. McCrady (Robert’s sister) in 1975
