The WWII Fallen at Normandy. In Sept 2013, two British artists, with the help of citizens from Arromanches, France drew the silhouettes of 9,000 fallen soldiers in the sand on the beach at Normandy. It took 200 volunteers and two years of planning. The event marked the International Day of Peace and the ghostly outlines remained on the sand until washed away by the tide. Hero. Heroes.

Beautiful tribute. Being on Normandy Beach was a surreal moment in my life that I will never forget.
A stirring tribute to the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives on June 6, 1944 (D-Day). 9,000 silhouettes were carved into the sand of this Normandy beach, by some 200 volunteers, creating a heart-breaking visual for those around. In the artist's own words, “All around us there are relics of the Second World War, but the one thing that is missing are the people who actually died...we've very quietly made a big statement.”

During the 1890s many people in upper- and middle-class society were unaware of the dangerous conditions in the slums among poor immigrants. Jacob Riis, a Danish immigrant who himself could not originally find much work, hoped to expose the squalor of the 19th-century Lower East Side of Manhattan.

President Barack Obama, living as a toddler in Hawaii with his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, dressed in a pirate costume. I guess it's probably Halloween (that appears to be a trick-or-treat bag on the ground behind him), but damn it, I prefer to think he insisted on dressing like this all the time. For like two straight years, like it was a phase he went through.

Mary Foust was the daughter of Daniel Foust. She never left East Tennessee and lived to be around 100 years old. When former President Teddy Roosevelt was visiting Tennessee she was considered the oldest living American at the time and he traveled to meet her and eat one of her home cooked meals. Sis and Coon were her children and her dog was named Pen. An American chestnut tree can be seen in the upper right hand corner of the photo. Mary was famous for living an unchanged lifestyle that was a living window into past. Mary was my grandmother's (Myrtle Foust) great aunt. She told the following story to me: " sometimes when I was a little girl I would take mail to Aunt Mary and her dog would chase me. Mary would scream out " here Pen, here Pen" and the dog would stop chasing me". Her loom is now in the "Museum of Appalachia" near where she once lived. My Great Great Grandfather (her brother), Christopher Columbus Foust Sr., raised sheep and I would assume wool was weaved on her loom. Myrtle Foust stated: “my papaw was a strong man, he could carry two full grown sheep at once, one under each arm. In the small town of Ashland, Pennsylvania, Route 61 takes an unexplained detour; a “Keep Out” sign straddles the original highway. Ignore the warning and you'll arrive in the abandoned town of Centralia, where an underground mine fire has been burning since 1962 when residents accidentally ignited a vein of anthracite coal. Despite efforts stop the fire it still burns today and could burn for 250 years. Some houses still stand but most have been demolished. 'Silent Hill' was based on this town
