he timely and critically acclaimed debut novel that's becoming a word-of-mouth phenomenon. An epic tale of fathers and sons, of friendship and betrayal, that takes us from Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to the atrocities of the present. The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption, and it is also about the power of fathers over sons-their love, their sacrifices, their lies. The first Afghan novel to be written in English, The Kite Runner tells a sweeping story of family, love, and friendship against a backdrop of history that has not been told in fiction before, bringing to mind the large canvases of the Russian writers of the nineteenth century. But just as it is old-fashioned in its narration, it is contemporary in its subject-the devastating history of Afghanistan over the last thirty years. As emotionally gripping as it is tender, The Kite Runner is an unusual and powerful debut.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini: A novel set mostly in Afghanistan. The introverted and insecure afghan narrator, Amir, grows up in Afghanistan in the closing years of the monarchy and the first years of the short-lived republic. His best and most faithful friend, Hassan, is the son of a servant.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Available in the Valencia West Campus Library.

"Over five years on the New York Times bestseller list, and published in 55 different languages. The Kite Runner is a novel about friendship, betrayal, and the price of loyalty. It is about the bonds between fathers and sons, and the power of their lies. Written against a history that has not been told in fiction before, The Kite Runner describes the rich culture and beauty of a land in the process of being destroyed. But with the devastation, Khaled Hosseini also gives us hope: through the novel's faith in the power of reading and storytelling, and in the possibilities he shows for redemption."

I enjoyed the book...but the movie was terrible because they felt they had to make it into a love story. is a love story...of a couple who fall in love with Italy!

Interesting, believable historical setting with complex characters and multiple story lines that intersect just enough to keep the plot moving.

Really amazing book! One of my Mom's favourites too!

Probably my second favorite book...I love the frosting!

A Thousand Splendid Suns. The book focuses on the tumultuous lives of two Afghan women and how their lives cross each other.

This was a fantastic book. I listened to the audio book and was riveted. Great characters. Just a good old fashioned story. Joyland (Hard Case Crime): Stephen King: 9781781162644: Books
