Place your seed starter pots in a clear plastic container as a mini greenhouse. Keep the lid on to increase the temperature as seeds grow and it also keeps bugs out! Interesting idea!
Inexpensive Mini Greenhouses - Plastic containers to grow food should have recycling numbers 1, 2, 4 and 5 on the bottom. Plastic containers with a 3 have PVC in them. In time chemicals leach out contaminating soil. Styrofoam is made of plastic number 6 and have cancerous effects, Number 7 contains bisphenol A which is harmful to the behavioral growth of children.

I made a few adjustments to this great cold frame/greenhouse DIY: 1) flip the box upside down and use it as a cloche to cover the plants so the clear part is on top. 2) use the lid as the base & line it w/ black plastic/paper to absorb more heat from the sun. 3) use biodegradable 4oz espresso cups (google to buy) for seeds. To transplant seedlings, cut bottom off cup, place in the ground - updates & new projects at the 2 DIY Board, https://www.pinterest.com/mclovebuddy/2-diy-garden-outdoors/

RAMBLINGS FROM A DESERT GARDEN....: Toilet Paper Rolls and Vegetable Seeds...
Lately, I have been collecting toilet paper rolls. Now I know that may sound a bit weird to some of you, but I needed them for my garden. So how on earth can toilet paper rolls help you in the garden? Well, they are an inexpensive, environmentally friendly tool in which to start seeds indoors. From upper right - bush beans, marigolds, Kentucky beans, cucumbers, sugar snap peas and spinach. I thought this would be a good project to do with the kids, so we gathered our seeds. We cut each toilet paper roll in half (you can use paper towel rolls and cut them into thirds for this too.) We used a planting mix that had slow-release fertilizer already included and also had water-holding granules. I advise wetting the soil before adding it to your toilet paper rolls. Now that we had everything, we were ready to start. The kids used tablespoons to 'spoon' the planting mix into each tube. Then we lightly pressed down the planting mix and added more. Now it was time to plant. Then we used a spray bottle filled with water to thoroughly water each planted seed. Now we had to create a 'mini-greenhouse' effect by covering our toilet paper rolls with clear plastic wrap with some holes in the top. Then we placed them on top of the refrigerator, where it was warm enough to help them germinate. Every day, we checked the moisture of each toilet paper roll and added more water if necessary. Once the seedlings germinated, we removed the plastic wrap permanently and placed our seedlings by our bright, sunny kitchen window. We are keeping the soil moist, but not soggy. Soon, we will be able to plant our seedlings (with their toilet paper rolls) in the vegetable garden. The cardboard from the toilet paper rolls will disintegrate into the soil. Of course, you can always use the ready-made plastic seeding trays, but I must admit that I like this method better :-)

I am constantly coming across or creating fun ways to reuse items rather than trash them! Below are 3 wonderful examples of easy DIY projects relating to Spring! These are also very kiddo Friendly! The Orange Peel Candle What You Will Need Orange Knife Oil (Canola or Olive should work fine) or melt down the wax of an old candle (longer burn time) How To Make It 1. Carve your orange using a knife. (For a longer burn time, try to leave more of the orange intact so there is an overhang. Cutting the peel in half, with no overhang, should provide about a 30min burn.) 2. Be sure to keep the stem in tact as it will become your wick. 3. Pour your oil into the orange peel. 4. Light the top of the stem and enjoy Egg Carton and Eggshell Seed Starter What You Will Need Empty egg cartons Empty Eggshells Seeds Soil Sunlight It's pretty self explanatory. To get an edge up on your garden, you can start your seedlings indoors about 6-8 weeks before you plant them. Add soil to the empty cartons and eggs, about three seeds per section and water with lukewarm or room temp water. Keep the seedling starters by a window and keep them moist. You may use plastic wrap covering the seedlings for a few weeks until the seeds start (to create a greenhouse effect). However, we do not use that method as it's not Earth Friendly. If your patient good ol' sun is all you need. once seedlings get to be a proper size you will want to be sure there is only one plant per section. Pine-cone Bird Feeders (This one's fun for the kid's too!) What You Will Need Pine cones from your yard Seeds Organic Nut Butter Plate or Pan from your Kitchen String (we use hemp twine) Take your pine cones and attach your twine to the top of them using firm knots. Using your plate or pan roll your Pine Cone in Nut Butter, roll again in Seeds (using another plate or pan). Repeat until you have your desired amount of feeders. Hang your feeder outside for the birds!
This blog post will offer some planting ideas for starting seeds using containers that you would normally throw away. This is a great way to teach young children about recycling. Burpee Seed Co. offers organic seeds designed to be planted in containers. Look for the flower pot on the bottom of the packet. Families attending Parent-Child Outreach group time are growing carrots in 2 liter drink bottles using organic seeds. According to the seed packet our carrots should be ready to harvest in 68 days. In addition to growing carrots, families will be planting mint, a bean stalk and a swimming pool salad garden. Also we will be learning about composting using our friend the earth worm. Follow our blog each week to watch our progress and get ideas for your own Lorax approved garden! Listed below are some examples of recycling to plant: Save those egg shells. When the seed becomes a seedling, gently crack the shell for drainage and plant in the ground. Cover the shell lightly with soil. Lemons make great vessels for holding small amounts of soil. Once the green leaves appear place the lemon in the ground and cover lightly with soil. Use toliet paper or paper towel rolls for planting. Cut rolls into 3-4 inch tubes . Place in a container to catch water run off. Fill tubes with seed starter soil and plant the seeds. When the green seedling appears, place the tube in the ground. Cover lightly with soil. Newspaper planting cups. Take a 3-4 0z plastic cup and wrap newspaper around it securing the sides and bottom with tape. Slide the cup out from the newspaper and you have another container in which to plant. Place newspaper cups in a plastic tub to catch water run off because they will leak. When the plant appears you can place the newspaper cup into the ground. Milk Carton Jugs are great for starting seedlings but they also make great containers to display and grow blooming plants. Make drainage holes in the bottom. Check daily to see if the plant needs watering. Plastic milk jugs will retain heat and the soil will become dry. Paint and add a ribbon to the handle.
