      I pinned this for an idea to do w my boys on a rainy day- cut out different pieces of construction paper for diff eye shapes, mouths, ears, clothes, hair etc and let them make a self portrait I think it would b neat to see what they pick then frame it w the date and their name and the left overs they could make silly faces or make portraits of their brothers dad or me

      Would use something other than gender........Mrs. Lee's Kindergarten: A great way to introduce statistics and graphs while promoting individual identity and sharing similarities. I have a "data collection" activity I like for the first week, and would love to incorporate displays like this.

    more "getting to know you" activities for the first weeks

    This is a great family activity to do before school starts! Parents lead your children to discuss what makes a good friend and make the chart together. Throughout the year when friendship issue arise, refer back to this list to help your child process the makings of a good friendship. Parents can share stories of their friendships and what made the friendship special.

    Grab & Graph activity using pattern blocks. This would be great to have on hand as a substitute teacher.

    This blog has great ideas for learning expectations and rules at the beginning of the year-she starts the year with empty shelves, then adds them as the students learn how to use them correctly. I have done this and it really helps

    First week.... I let my kids paint a self portrait then I write their name in bold back marker and place it on the wall so they never have to ask how to spell a classmate's name.....they love it. AND....I just use the long construction paper....no copies!

    Get to know you form- This might be good for after the first-day-of-Art-class-business. Could change it even more to favorite things about Art, something they want to learn, etc.

    Teach children how to be a great friend - great poem to introduce to school age children in understanding friendship.

    Make a "Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar" class book, and "The Kissing Hand" class book.

    I do this at the beginning of the year to work on name recognition but I really like how this graph is set up!
