These Awesome Chairs Are Made Entirely From Ocean-Polluting Plastic | Co.Exist: World changing ideas and innovation
The Sea Chair project “We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects” - Moby Dick, Herman Melville created by Studio Swine & Kieren Jones - response to growing levels of waste plastic ocean. Merging craft, industry & design - project harnesses struggling fishing industry to produce series of chairs created from plastic collected at sea.
sea chair project by studio swine By encouraging struggling fisherman to trawl for plastic rather than fish, the Sea Chair Project (a) provides landfill-mining work for the suffering fishing industry and (b) removes a percentage of plastic from our oceans. And by partnering with a fisherman to produce a “floating factory” out of his retired boat, the plastics can be collected, sorted, molded, manufactured and shipped – all while floating along the ocean’s shore from a single boat.
