    Assorted hair pins. Kingfisher inlay done in floral and insect sprays with various semi-precious stones and silk thread. One hair pin looks to be cinnabar with Kingfisher inlay. Mid to late Qing Dynasty. Not sure if already tumbl’d… but… Are you really going to be mad if I did? I hope not. You guys are the coolest.

Qing Dynasty kingfisher feather hairpin Made in the 19th century... The blue parts of this hairpin are made out of kingisher feathers. Kingfisher feathers were often used to decorate crowns and tiaras in the Qing court.

Gorgeous Chinese kingfisher hair ornament with Jade(?) green stones.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that the bright blue decorations on traditional Chinese jewellery are enamel or metal work. However, historically, these were in fact made with tiny kingfisher feathers - and I mean TINY, having seen some similar pieces in person! The effect looks almost like silk embroidery and is a testament to the amount of craftsmanship that went into these pieces.
