      Grant Wood, American Gothic (1930), Art Institute of Chicago The painting shows a farmer standing beside his spinster daughter, figures modeled by the artist's dentist & sister, Nan (1900–1990). Wood's sister insisted that the painting depicts the farmer's daughter & not wife, disliking suggestions it was the farmer's wife. The dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby (1867–1950) was from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
