Coffee Grounds as a Fertilizer: If you are looking to add a garden bed, build up an existing one, or just repair a section of the garden, coffee grounds can used in all these cases. All that needs to be done is for the coffee grounds to be mixed in with soil, at a ratio of 50/50, and it is then ready to be added to the garden. A good soaking in is required after this, and then leave the whole thing to settle in for a few days before adding plants or seed to the new soil.

Homemade, nontoxic deodorizing Spray
Homemade Deodorizing Spray – Non-Toxic and Green A green, non-toxic spray. "Forest Fairy" essential oil blend with benefits of each oil listed on the page.
Spray – Non-Toxic and Green March 6, 2013 by Sara @ My Merry Messy Life 20 Comments This is one deodorizing spray that smells divine – and it’s cheap and easy to make with no harsh or toxic chemicals. It’s safe for those with asthma and allergies, too! I’ve also included a free printable to tack onto your bottle so you never have to look up the recipe again. Ever thought about what’s in your fabric freshener and room deodorizing spray? Well, according to the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) guide, one of the most popular brands on the market (Febreze) is highly toxic and gets a failing F grade. Yikes. Read the report here. Why is it so toxic? Quite a few of the ingredients are highly toxic to aquatic life (which will harm our lakes and streams if poured down the drain and get into the ground water during the manufacturing process), it contains endocrine disrupting compounds and irritates those with asthma and allergies. All that mess for a product that isn’t even essential – so ironic that the thing we spray into our air to supposedly improve our air quality is actually filling it with junk! Thankfully, it’s super easy to make your own at home using just vinegar, water and essential oils! You might be wondering why I chose to use vinegar, as most can agree it’s not terribly fun smelling. It’s actually the secret weapon in this spray as it does a great job at deodorizing and removing the smells. The vinegar smell dissipates very quickly and what’s left behind is the trail of essential oils you choose to put in it. So, I created this concoction from Plant Therapy’s Organic Essentials Set, which I had the opportunity to review, and named it Forest Fairies Blend because it combines the woodsy scent of the cedarwood and rosemary with the bright, sweet scents of the orange and peppermint. I love this set as it is organic (great for sustainable farming) and contains such a nice collection of oils – some of which I use often and others I don’t, so it was fun to experiment with new oils. On their site, Plant Therapy sells Therapeutic Synergy oil blends to help fight acne, anxiety, eczema, and even the blues. I love how on each bottle there is a description of the oil’s properties and here’s what’s written for each of the ones in this recipe: (please note that these should all be used with a carrier oil before applying to your own skin or body – do not apply essential oils directly on the skin as they are highly concentrated) Orange Oil Antidepressant, antiseptic, antipasmodic, aphrodisiac, stimulant (nervous) and more! It can also be applied (with a carrier oil) to combat colds, constipation, dull skin, flatulence, the flu, gums, slow digestion and reduce stress. Cedarwood Oil It is calming, soothing and beneficial for all states of tension and anxiety, instilling feelings of peace. It is also considered an aphrodisiac in that it is grounding and inspiring at the same time. It can even help with oily skin, acne, cellulite, chronic skin conditions and respiratory problems. Peppermint Oil Proven to aid in digestion and is known for both its warming and cooling properties. It is a mental stimulant that is friendly to the sinuses, and useful to the muscular system especially for women during monthly cycles and menopause. It relieves bad breath and is a good nerve tonic that helps with mental fatigue and stress. Rosemary Oil Stimulates cell renewal and improves dry or mature skin, easing lines and wrinkles. It helps to overcome mental fatigue and sluggishness by stimulating and strengthening the entire nervous system. It also enhances mental clarity while aiding in alertness and concentration. It can help one cope with stressful conditions and see things from a clearer perspective. WOW! When was the last time your deodorizing spray read that not only is it 100% natural, safe and non-toxic, but can actually help with mental clarity, is an antidepressant and aphrodisiac and helps alleviate stress and mental fatigue?! Essential oils are powerful. Now, of course, you can use any combination of essential oils you please to make this spray. I suggest combing them in a small bowl until you get a scent you like and then add it to the vinegar and water. Other oils that would make a wonderful deodorizing spray include lavender, grapefruit, cinnamon, vanilla, rose, lime and geranium, all of which can be purchase.
