Dadoes provide an excellent way to join cabinet sides to shelves, but in order for the joint to be strong the dado cut needs to be right. There are two common conventions for determining the depth of a dado cut, and we’ll explain them here.
When you need wide pieces for a project and don’t want to use sheet stock, man made material, you’ll be doing a panel glue up; gluing pieces edge to edge. There are a handful of things that need to happen to create a successful edge to edge glue up. A well constructed panel glue up will have grain match, color match, good glue joints, and come out flat. Here are a number of tips that will help you compose great panels for your projects.
Gluing together boards in an edge-to-edge arrangement to form one large panel is an important skill that most woodworkers want to master. This requires careful planning to ensure that the right number of boards is used, and that those boards are cut to the ideal width to maximize yield for the project. It also demands precision accuracy from your cutting tools, whether the joints are cut using a table saw or jointer, so that an invisible glue line can be established.
