I love the combination of so many techniques in this piece! Bias tape pinwheels, Suffolk puffs, embroidery, crochet, applique and the giant flower made from twisted strips of fabric! Repeating the same shaped flowers in different techniques and similar colours brings the whole piece together instead of making it look scrappy.
Miss Lily Elsie (1886-1962) was a celebrated Edwardian beauty and star of theater, especially of musical comedy – with “The Merry Widow” as her first huge success. She was a favorite of many, such as the prime minister Lloyd George, and it is reputed that Cecil Beaton’s facination with her was the driving force in his interest in fashion, costume and photographic portraiture.
