Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World By Alexander Norman, Dalai Lama--- Must read for the world!
Presently reading "Beyond Religion" by @dalailama - great book
In his new book "Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World" His Holiness the Dalai Lama suggests that religion is not a necessity for pursuing a spiritual life. Rather he proposes a system of secular ethics that transcends religion as a way to recognize our common humanity and so contributes to a global human community based on understanding and mutual respect.

His right-wing, super-patriotic persona, his insight and general rightness led to The Colbert Report, a half-hour TV platform for his views on the issues of the day and, more importantly, why everyone else's views are just plain wrong. Entertaining book worth reading
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. True murder mystery. One of my most favorite all time books!! So well written.
One of the more under appreciated books of the late 20th Century, Mark Helprin's work stretches the bounds of fiction, fantasy and the horror of WWI. The vivid descriptions of Rome, the Alps, Sicily, Venice, the array of characters and a penchant for intertwining hilarity with sorrow makes this a regular reading destination for me.

Larger world: Why Scientists Should Embrace the Liberal Arts: This is a good article, but it is really here as a proxy for the argument that learning how to creatively communicate is key to scientific and social advancement.
10 Novels That Will Sharpen Your Mind [Interactive] Novels may be made up, but the emotions they evoke are real. These feelings grow out of our connection to the novel’s characters and the relationships between a protagonist and others in the context of the broader society. As we follow the ups and downs of a carefully crafted story, we build connections within the social and emotional regions of the brain. The result, according to recent research, is a better understanding of other human beings and a deeper empathy for others, leading to improved social skills. Historians have also claimed that great works of fiction have lent support to the concept of human rights. (For more on the psychology of fiction, see “In the Minds of Others,” by Keith Oatley, Scientific American Mind, November/December 2011.)
My aunt gave me this for Christmas and said everyone should read this. She's right. It's a non-fiction book that reads like a novel and everyone will find something to relate to and it's something everyone should learn about because it affects every life. I'm not done but I highly recommend it thus far!
fantastic read. both for the story of an incredible life, and the leaps and bounds science/society has made

The Life of Elizabeth I - Alison Weir . This is a history book but written in such a way that it never seems boring or dry. Weir makes Elizabeth come alive!
The Life of Elizabeth I by Alison Weir Perhaps the most influential sovereign England has ever known, Queen Elizabeth I remained an extremely private person throughout her reign, keeping her own counsel and sharing secrets with no one--not even her closest, most trusted advisers. Now, in this brilliantly researched, fascinating new book, acclaimed biographer Alison Weir shares provocative new interpretations and fresh insights on this enigmatic figure.
The Life of Elizabeth I, by Alison Weir. One of my favorite books. The in-depth descriptions of the period are engrossing.

Storytime Standouts looks at wordless picture book, Good Dog, Carl created by Alexandra Day and published by Simon and Schuster
Good Dog, Carl book depository amazon by Alexandra Day is a fun book, if you can get over the fact that a mother leaves her baby in the charge of a rottweiler! With endearing illustrations and lots of humour, we follow the baby's adventures during their eventful day, including sliding down the laundry chute and swimming in the fish tank. Carl, the rottweiler, then bathes the infant, cleans up all the mess and waits nonchalantly for the mother to come home. Wordless Book

Susan Cain: Quiet - The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking. "You're told that you're "in your head too much", a phrase that's often deployed against the quiet and cerebral. ---- Or maybe there's another word for such people: 'thinkers'.”

Dogs in a market listen to the famous Persian poet Rumi, who praises their attention and understanding. One of many illustrations made in the late 16th century by Turkish artists. I've read little of Rumi's poetry but have admired the bits that I have seen. His poetry and these illustrations make me think of the era when Turkish, Arabic and Persian were flowering languages whose writers produced works we still read today. I do wonder what life was like then.
