October: Early Frost, bead embellished quilt by Thom Atkins

"October: Early Frost" by Thom Atkins Frost, the herald of winter, is accompanied by rich reds and browns and lavenders. The silk leaves were part of a table centerpiece I found at a Thrift Store. Free to fall on a brook, rapidly icing over, they are only partially secured to the background. I invented a new stitch to frost them around their edges. The brook is covered with a piece of polyester gauze to give it sheen. The leaves coming off the edge ...give a sense of movement.

I usually don't want to see the thread. I like to look at the patterns. But this time, the juxtaposition of both makes it ethereal in one way and graphic in another.
