GERMANY. Authentic plague doctor mask, presumably 14th century. // The "beak" would be stuffed with herbs to protect the doctor from the miasma that it was believed carried the plague.
This was the mask worn by a doctor. It was to help the doctor. It helped because so he didn't get the black death. It was designed so the doctor didn't get the black death.

Initiate a gender bender day somewhere
This is a photograph relatable to Pantomime not necessarily solely due to the fact that it was taken in what was seemingly Victorian times, but in tandem due to the fact that these two gentlepeople are destroying gender roles by dressing this way, just as Micah/Gene destroys gender roles by pursuing what she believes to be her destiny.
vintage couple unusual. Not sure if they are actually cross dressed or if they just did victorian trick photography, the face swap is not a new meme, either way its a interesting image

The photographs here come from Wilder Mann, a photography series by Charles Fréger (based in Rouen, France), who spent two years traveling through nineteen countries documenting the folk pageants and festivals of what he calls "tribal Europe." The resulting photographs have been exhibited internationally, and collected into an absolutely amazing art book. The art, in turn, inspired a CD of music by the Italian composer .and sound designer Theo Teardo, Music for Wilderness.

Wildermann --For two years, French photographer Charles Fréger has been traveling throughout 19 European countries and trying to capture the spirit of what he calls “tribal Europe” in his “Wilder Mann” series. What he found was a huge array of pagan rituals, mainly related to the winter solstice and spring renewal, focusing on the common myth of the “wild man.”
Conjoined twins Josefa & Rosa Blazek (1878-1922) with Rosa's son in 1910. I don't know of any other conjoined twin giving birth. Their manager was rumored to be the father, but they never disclosed this publicly. Little Franz joined their act as 'the son with two mothers'. The twins came down with influenza in 1922 and died within minutes of each other.

This is just a crazy photo. Hippos maybe thought of as funny and cute but they kill more people in Africa than most any other animal.
Retronaut - Hippo cart: “After considerable coaching at the hands of an animal trainer, “Lotus,” a circus hippopotamus enjoying winter quarters in California, was taught to haul a two-wheeled cart. A V-shaped tongue attached to a broad band around the creature’s back made traces unnecessary. A bridle of strong leather with the reins attached to the jaws completed the harness, and aided in directing the “river horse” which seemed to enjoy its “stunt” as it walked to its pool and back.”
