Sally Milgrim hat ca. 1940. The late 1930s brought a revival of the diminutive hats popular in the 1870s. Newly dubbed "doll hats," the small creations, frequently trimmed with flowers and veils, perched at an angle above the brow. Despite the critics who deemed the small size of the hats frivolous, Sally Milgrim and other designers produced versions at a range of prices.

This whimsical example demonstrates how materials could be expertly manipulated by milliners to create shapes, here eye-popping magenta fruit or floral forms, creating a miniature garden vignette completely made of feathers.
