GOBI DESERT MONGOLIA The Gobi Desert is one of the most remote areas in the world, and one of the most uninhabited. Covering 500,000 square miles between Siberia and the Tibetan plateau, it's also one of the few places on earth that's home to the Bactrian camel, with its distinctive double humps and shaggy coat.
Three young women sport ghoulish, indigo grins to celebrate the dead for Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The holiday is a celebratory and sometimes emotional way to remember those who have died. Traditions include trails of marigold petals leading souls from the street to the family home, egg-based pan de muerto, and graveside picnics. The best known ceremonies are located on Mexico's tiny island of Janitzio and in towns like Xoxo outside of Oaxaca city.
