ichiya-tei (one-night teahouse), 2003 • architectural design by terunobu fujimori + nobumichi ohshima (ohshima atelier)
why bother with a treehouse that has branches above that could crash on your roof, and that continues to grow (which loosens your joints) when you can find a few dead tree trunks (still anchored by roots to the ground) to use as foundations for a strong and safe house? terunobu fujimori
Takasugi-an, which literally means, “a teahouse [built] too high,” is indeed more like a tree house than a teahouse. In order to reach the room, the guests must climb up the freestanding ladders propped up against one of the two chestnut trees supporting the whole structure. The trees were cut and brought in from the nearby mountain to the site.
