Kathryn Stockett, Author of The Help Obviously one of the best books I've read in a long time. I highly recommend the book. Movie was good, but the books was awesome!
There's a reason this title is on every book club reading list...it's very good! The compelling story takes place during an ugly time in our country's history and combines tragedy, hope and triumphs of humanity. Tough to put down.
excellent.. my 2nd favorite book. Movie was pretty darn good too.
The Help by Kathryn Stockett - I was told this was worth reading
The Help by Kathryn Stockett. One of my absolute favorite Books!
Awesome book & movie!
"There is so much you don't know about a person. I wonder if I could've made her days a little bit easier, if I'd tried. If I'd treated her a little nicer. Wasn't that the point of the book? For women to realize, We are just two people. Not that much separates us. Not nearly as much as I'd thought." -The Help, Kathryn Stockett, p. 492 We judge based on what we perceive, what we think we know. We set boundaries based on these abstract concepts. We separate others, group people and things where they "belong" in the categories that we create. Cheap. Classy. Smart. Dirty. Weak. Sexy. Executive. Kind. Blue collar. Creative. Rigid. Annoying. Compassionate. Awkward. Abrasive. Humble. Patriotic. Proper. Simple. Mature. Beautiful. And the list goes on. But in doing so, we separate ourselves. We think we belong in certain categories. We draw invisible lines. It's been a while since I've read a really good book (Modern Library's Top 100 Novels has had some let-downs), so I took a break from my reading list to read The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Someone had left the book (willingly) in our apartment mail room, so I picked it up (and will return it now that I've finished). Nothing better than a good free book! I can't speak for the movie, but if you haven't read the book, you must. It really is excellent. I challenge us all this week to remove one invisible line. When you read the above list of adjectives, what or who came to mind? Why? Is it fair to categorize them that way? Where do you belong?
My Favorite Book Club Reads! (she: Rebecca) - Or so she says...

This book is in my top 5 favorite reads ever! I laughed, I cried, I learned about an amazing group of people and I was so sad to see this book come to an end. Make sure you have some time to spare if you decide to pick up this book. You won't want to put it down!
Thank God for fresh, new writing! This and Water for Elephants are two of my favorite "new" novels. Kathryn Stockett does an amazing job of making the reader feel that he or she is in 1960s era Jackson, MS.
The Help My favorite book and a well done movie. Some of the characters remind me of people in modern day world which isn't really a good thing. Mrs. Hilly the ultimate bully!

The Book Thief Read July 2014 for Breadalbane book club. WWII from a different perspective. What is Death haunted by? Death the narrator tells the story of a young German girl who's family hid a Jew. She is one of the people left behind that haunts him.
All I knew about this book when it was recommended for my son's book club (when he was 12) was that it was narrated by Death. Hmmmm. Sounded dark, so I thought I'd better investigate. The book club ended up not reading it, but I listened to the audiobook and declared it my favorite book of the year!
Just finished this book today. Narrated by Death, this book tells the story of a young girl in Nazi Germany. Amazing book
"The Book Thief" Markus Zusak. Fiction. The book is set in Nazi, Germany. It describes a young girl's relationship with foster parents, the other resident's of their neighborhood, and a Jewish fist-fighter who hides in her home during WWII. New York Bestseller List (2006) for over 230 weeks. One of my favorite books because it is so well-written.

book club book books-worth-reading
On Monday night I sat down to write about the young adult pick for the March session of The Phenomenally Indecisive Book Club. There were points I needed to address and suggestions I wanted to rece...
Oh, my goodness. I have been reading and hearing about The Book Thief by Markus Zusak for a long time, but I've just now finally read it myself. To be perfectly honest, I picked up my copy over a year ago at the used bookstore in my library and even though I had heard how wonderful it was, I wasn't in a hurry to read it. I have so many books on my "To Read..." list that I have to pick what sounds good that day and a book about the holocaust didn't exactly sound like a fun read. However, when it was my turn to host book club, I went with this one. (Everyone loved it!) And I was right, a book about a young girl's perspective of the holocaust in 1940s Germany wasn't what I would call fun, but it was brilliant. Zusak is an extraordinary author and The Book Thief is beautifully written. The haunting imagery he uses brings the reader right in to the story and the characters are so well developed they feel like friends. Even Death, the narrator of this enthralling novel, seems more like a companion and advocate than the evil Grim Reaper so often envisioned. I think the most shocking thing about this book, for me anyway, was that it wasn't pure fiction. How could this have really happened? I have a simple understanding of the holocaust that probably most publicly educated Americans have. I've read about it, I've seen documentaries (though I admit I skipped Schindler's List because I didn't want those images in my head), but through this book, my eyes have been opened to so much more. It is easy to lump all Germans at that time into the Nazi box, but I now see that there were many Germans who were not in agreement with Hitler and his ideas. The fear was so strong that it was difficult for most people to stand and fight. It is possible that they never knew that the people standing on either side of them wanted to fight, too. Of course, the next logical question to me is this: What can we do to make sure nothing like it ever happens again? We must be involved with and aware of the world around us. We must speak up. We must help those in need and never turn our backs. And now, I must get off my soap box and go read something lighter. This was a wonderful book and one I really believe everyone should read. Have you read it? Tell me what you thought.

I read this Daniel and we loved it! If you're a dog lover you will too. Approriate enough to read with kids but interesting enough for adults.
I think maybe I like dogs cuz here's the second dog book I'm pinning. I like the image falling off the bottom of the page.
A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron. All dogs go to heaven - unless they have unfinished business here on Earth. This is the remarkable story of one endearing dog's search for his purpose over the course of several lives. "A Dog's Purpose" is a dog's-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man's best friend.
A tear-jerker for sure, but my favorite dog book to date!

Sarah's Key #sarahskey A great WWII book from the point of view of a jewish child living in France, and a present day journalist researching WWII.
Such an amazing book. Sarahs Key - She closed the door on the little white face, turned the key in the lock. Then she slipped the key into her pocket. The lock was hidden by a pivoting device shaped like a light switch. It was impossible to see the outline of the cupboard in the paneling of the wall. Yes, he’d be safe there. She was sure of it. The girl murmured his name and laid her palm flat on the wooden panel. “I’ll come back for you later. I promise.” -From Sarah’s Key, page 9-

Today is my first Book Club Friday! I am hoping to get in the swing of reading again and I am sure I will find some great suggestions over at Blonde...Undercover Blonde's link up. The last book that I read was Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. I picked it up on the way to get a pedicure to have something to read and the main reason I settled on it was that it is a historical novel. The main story is fictional but the events that occurred are factual. I loved the book and I was unable to put it down once I started. It is the first book that I have read since becoming a mother and I saw what a different light I view things from. If you read it, you will see why. I also see that I must have been under a rock somehow missed the fact that it has been made into a movie. Here is an overview from Barnes & Noble: Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten-year-old girl, is taken with her parents by the French police as they go door to door arresting Jewish families in the middle of the night. Desperate to protect her younger brother, Sarah locks him in a bedroom cupboard—their secret hiding place—and promises to come back for him as soon as they are released. Sixty Years Later: Sarah’s story intertwines with that of Julia Jarmond, an American journalist investigating the roundup. In her research, Julia stumbles onto a trail of secrets that link her to Sarah, and to questions about her own future. In Sarah’s Key, Tatiana de Rosnay offers up a mesmerizing story in which a tragic past unfolds, the present is torn apart, and the future is irrevocably altered. And here are some reviews: “This is a remarkable historical novel, a book which brings to light a disturbing and deliberately hidden aspect of French behavior towards Jews during World War II. Like Sophie's Choice, it's a book that impresses itself upon one's heart and soul forever.” –Naomi Ragen, author of The Saturday Wife and The Covenant “Sarah's Key unlocks the star crossed, heart thumping story of an American journalist in Paris and the 60-year-old secret that could destroy her marriage. This book will stay on your mind long after it's back on the shelf.” –Risa Miller, author of Welcome to Heavenly Heights I hope that if you pick it up you love it also! If you are looking for something new to read, or have a book review yourself, hop on over to Book Club Friday and link up!
