Take a balloon filled with tepid water, heat up your wax, dip the balloon into the warmed wax, without touching the pan that it's melted in, repeat until the desired thickness. Cool. Stick it in the fridge to make sure the wax is set, then drain the waterballoon over a sink, remove the bits of latex, add a tealight candle. Put on warm cookie sheet to flatten bottom. this is really cool

Lovely Lumiere: DIY Candles Hope you’re all sufficiently rested after lovely weekends to feel up to tackling this gorgeous little project that we found on www.candletech.com. So simple to make, and so gorgeous for any party or wedding, these little wax lumieres can be made in any size (depending on how big you make the balloons), so we’d suggest making lots and lots of all different dimensions and group them together to create glowing, organic centerpieces. Also, if you’re feeling braver, mix some colour into the wax and play around with different shades and tones – we’re going to try milky pinks and peaches for a soft, romantic feel… we’ll keep you posted on how we get on!! Enjoy, Aoife & Deirdre xx Now for the ‘How-To’… we’re giving you the pretty pictures first, and the instructions below ;0) You will need : High Melt Paraffin Wax (try most good craft stores), party balloons, a double boiler, non-stick cookie / biscuit sheet. 1. Fill balloon with tepid water. 2. Melt your wax. Optimum working temperature for this project is 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Try to maintain this temperature for your wax while working by keeping it on a double boiler. 3. Slowly dip your balloon into the wax to just below the water level in the balloon. Warning: Do not dip the balloon into the wax past the water level. This could cause the balloon to pop. 4. Hold the balloon in the wax for a few seconds, and then slowly lift it out of the wax. Dip the balloon a few more times, allowing some time between dips to let the wax cool. 5. While it is still quite warm, carefully set the balloon down onto a piece of paper or a cookie sheet, making sure it is level. This will create a flat bottom for the lumiere. 6. Dip your balloon a few more times until it is the desired thickness. A good target thickness is ¼ to ½ of an inch. 7. Set the balloon on the paper or cookie sheet again and let it cool. 8. When the wax is completely cooled, hold the balloon over a sink or bucket, facing away from you. Carefully pop the balloon with a skewer or knife and let the water drain out. Throw away the balloon shards. 9. To level the top of the lumiere, heat a cookie sheet on the stove and place the lumiere top-down onto the hot sheet and carefully melt the edges until it is level. 10. Place a tea light or votive inside the lumiere and burn on a candle holder in a dark area…. gorgeous!

Ice Candles: wax/crayons, old taper candle (you can just use a wick but a taper ensures wax is touching all parts of the wick for even burning), ice, old milk/juice cartons. Melt wax, place taper candle in center of carton, fill carton with ice, pour melted wax over ice. Let dry, pour out water and tear carton away.

How to Make Candles Make your own candles for this year's holiday centerpiece by recycling milk containers for candle molds These lacy-looking candles are easy to make using wax and candle dye...or even old candles! They take a few days to dry so make them well in advance of your party. 1.Wash and dry the inside of wax-coated paper cartons. (We used half-pint milk cartons and 64-ounce juice cartons.) Place on a cookie sheet. 2.In a double boiler over low heat, melt clear wax and add candle dye in the color of your choice. (You can also melt candles in the color of your choice; remove and discard the wicks.) 3. Estimate how much wax you'll need to fill each carton half full. Having too much wax is better than not having enough. 4. Add a few drops of melted wax to the bottom of a carton. Immediately place a taper candle in the color of your choice into the wax. Let the wax set. 5.Fill the carton half full with pieces of ice in different sizes and shapes. Pour enough melted wax into the carton to cover the ice. 6.Let stand until the wax is hardened and the ice is melted. Pour out the water; carefully tear the carton away. Let the candle stand a few days to dry completely before using. 7.Be sure to place the lighted candle on a holder to collect the wax as it melts.

DIY Candles. ****You can microwave wax chips! Yes it is safe. Keep an eye on the wax and take it out as soon as it is in the liquid stage. Be careful as it will be very very hot.
Here's the candle making tutorial I use - Martha Stewart's guide to making scented soy votive candles.
Here's the candle making tutorial I use - Martha Stewart's guide to making scented soy votive candles. I loosely follow this. I used to get most of my supplies from yaley.com instead of multiple sites, but I recently found a bunch of things I needed at Hobby Lobby. This guide will tell you how to get it done.
Scented Soy Votive Candles - Martha Stewart Candlemaking
Step 1 To determine the quantity of soy wax you will need, fill votive glass with water and measure that volume. Melt wax in a microwave, following package instructions. Add wax color chips, stirring to melt and blend, until desired color is achieved. For scent, add essential oils to wax (for 3 cups of wax, you'll need about 40 drops); stir to blend. Step 2 Set the wick in place: Thread a length of braided wick through a metal wick tab, then "glue" it to the bottom of the glass with a dab of melted wax. Tie wick to a skewer resting atop the glass, so it stays taut and centered. Using a funnel, pour wax into each glass, running the wax over the wick to coat it. Let wax dry and harden thoroughly. If surface dips, fill in with extra wax. Trim the wick to 1/4 inch. Read more at Marthastewart.com: Scented Soy Votive Candles - Martha Stewart Crafts
