Old Lancaster County Sheriff's Department    A fire here on Decemeber 17, 1979 killed eleven inmates. It is said to be one of the worst jail fires in American history. The buildhag, built in 1823 of thick masonry construction, received little damage from the fire. Most of the deaths were attributed to smoke inhalation.It now houses Lancaster County Emergency Management offices.
