Hex signs are a form of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art grown out of the fraktur and folk art traditions about 1850 when barns first started to be painted in the area. They are talismanic and decorative in nature.
Like the larger versions built by and German immigrants to PA, this pine chest is painted with stylized birds, hearts, tulips or scrolls. Similar motifs typically graced calligraphic documents, or frakturs.
