The Bengali alphabet is the writing system for the Bengali language. The script with variations is shared by Assamese and is basis for Meitei, Bishnupriya Manipuri, Kokborok, Garo and Mundari alphabets. All these languages are spoken in the eastern region of South Asia. Direction: Left-to-right. Time period 11th Century to the present. Parent systems: Proto-Sinaitic, Phoenician, Aramaic, Brāhmī, Gupta, Siddham,  Assamese/Bengali.

The Phoenician alphabet. Note that ’ and ‘ were originally full consonants in the Phoenician language (glottal stop and voiced pharyngeal respectively). Several of the letters were ambiguous (i.e. denoted more than one consonant phoneme) when the Phoenician alphabet was borrowed to write Old Aramaic and Biblical Hebrew, but there is no clear evidence of this for the Phoenician language itself.
