‘We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,’ always seemed to me like an odd expression, as if somehow saying it meant we can solve a problem, we just don’t want to, or that you just wanted to avoid the whole thing altogether. It seems to to make more sense to say we’ll cross that river, or gorge, or desert when it comes up. But here you have a bridge that was built to get you to the other side of something.
