USATODAY: Fight over genetically engineered crops on Calif. ballot

California voters will soon decide whether to require special labels for food made from genetically modified ingredients, in a closely watched test of consumer attitudes about the merits of genetically engineered crops.

The California Secretary of State’s office announced that the Right to Know initiative to label genetically engineered foods will be on the state’s November ballot. The historic initiative would be the first law in the United States requiring labeling of a wide range of genetically engineered foods.

Label GMOs. We have a right to know what we eat and feed to our families. :)

Engineered/laboratory-grown food is more commonly known as genetically modified foods (GMOs).

Presently, the U.S. is the only developed country in the world that does not require the labeling of GMOs. Even communist countries Russia and China label foods with GMOs, allowing their citizens the fundamental right to know what they eat.

Approximately 90% of corn grown in US is genetically modified. Farmers in Europe and Asia say that cows, water buffaloes, chickens, and horses died from eating genetically engineered corn varieties. Unfortunately, no official studies are being made to identify its long term health effects on humans.

I have the right to know what I am eating. And so do you.
