To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Time is the true test for something to be considered a classic. Somehow I missed reading this in high school and college. If ever there was a "modern" classic, this is it. Don't miss reading this one!
To Kill a Mockingbird- Harper Lee This was my absolute favorite book as a young girl, and I still get so much out of it every time I revisit it. Atticus and Scout helped make me who I am, and that's one of the ways you know a GREAT book from a good one.
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee (I know it's on the high school list. I think it's more 9th grade, but I wanted to include it to pair with Mockingbird by Erskine
To Kill a Mockingbird - by Harper Lee I've never been more pleased by a book I was forced to read in high school. :)

Uncle Silas by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu - if you like gothic horror in the true, original style , Le Fanu is a writer to check out. Leading writer of ghost/horror stories in the victorian era. Uncle Silas, written in 1864 has creepy old mansions, nasty relatives, weird cults and of course a damsel in distress who finds strength within herself!

This is my favorite book I read so far in 2014. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. A young boy struggling with the sudden loss of his mother becomes entranced with a small painting that draws him into the mysterious underworld of the art industry. Winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
'The Goldfinch,' by Donna Tartt; next up on my reading list, but I think I might save it for our trip to Hawaii in two weeks.
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Selected by Amazon, The New York Times, The Economist, The Washington Post, Barnes & Noble, Kirkus Reviews and Booklist.
The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind....Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction."--Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review
The Goldfinch written by Donna Tartt - Theodore Decker, an art dealer whose New York adventures revolve around a Dutch masterwork. Read the book reviews on our page http://circleme.com/items/the-goldfinch
The Goldfinch: A Novel (Pulitzer Prize for Fiction): Donna Tartt. Engaging story about the struggles of a young boy growing up in a world of dysfunction following a bomb blast in the Met where he loses his mother, meets an inspirational elder, first glances his life long muse and "steals" a painting. Sad and sobering and often "long' but a good read just the same.
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Just finished reading this epic book--Wow! Book club selection.

The Once and Future King. I did quite a bit of King Arthur reading in college and a few books stood out but none so much as TH White's. This is a must read for anyone even vaguely interested in the Arthurian legend. Disney's King Arthur movie is based upon this book.
King Arthur-- my favorite book! And the favorite book of JFK. My love affair with all things Camelot began with this book.

My grandmother bought me this book as a young girl and even though I loved the movies I never read it. Its now on my "summer must-read list"
Anne Of Green Gables...One of my favorite series growing up. I began naming trees and rocks while reading these books.
Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?" - Lucy Maud Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables.
Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery - this whole series is good for anyone; but a must for your girls. I think I read these 3 or 4 times as a kid. :)

The Traitor's Wife: Kathleen Kent (also publised as The Wolves of Andover) is the prequel to Kathleen Kent's The Heretic's Wife. This is the story of how Martha Allen became the wife of Thomas Carrier (Morgan) and gives the reader a more detailed history of Thomas's past. Kent has a way of weaving words that keeps me drawn in and wanting to know what will happen. It's been a while since I read something from colonial history and I enjoyed this one very much.

Historical Fiction, colonial Mass. The Wolves of Andover, Kathleen Kent author of The Heretic's Daughter.
After Thomas Carrier saves Martha Allen from a wolf attack, he discovers wild animals are not the only dangers lurking in the Massachusetts woods: assassins have arrived from London to capture Charles I's executioner, said to be living outside Boston under an assumed name. A prequel to "The Heretic's Daughter."
Not set directly in Salem, "The Wolves of Andover" is a prequel to "The Heretic's Daughter," which is set in Salem. A great read for historical fiction fans!
"The Wolves of Andover" is a prequel to "The Heretic's Daughter," and is the story of my 8th great grandfather Thomas Carrier.
"The Wolves of Andover" is the prequel to The Heretic's Daughter. Another great work by Kent. When I finish a book that is great, such as this one, it makes me sad that I did not find a love of reading until I was older...think of all the books I missed out on.
The Wolves of Andover, by Kathleen Kent. $10. This prequel to Kent’s The Heretic’s Daughter (2008) focuses on the early life of outspoken, tart-tongued Martha Allen, from whom the author is descended. Set in seventeenth-century Massachusetts.
This is the prequel to "Heretic's Daughter". It wasn't as good because it changes scenes throughout but if you stick with it I think you'll enjoy it in the end.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Obsessive love story long before the Twilight series. If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger. - #the librarian s list all time favorite books
Although a teacher made me read Jane Eyre in high school English, it was Wuthering Heights by another Bronte sister that I read of my own free will, and more than once.
My favourite book of all time is Wuthering Heights.By the end, I'd fallen in love with this novel and every couple of years I re-read this classic of literature.
Wuthering Heights - one of my all time favorite books. The love story in this is captivating and heartbreaking!!
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I 'stole' (read as: checked out and never returned then Paid the fee so I could graduate") from our high school library. Read it while getting my WASP tan on between my junior and senior year. Fell in love with the Bronte sisters. Can read this again and again.
Wuthering Heights: "My greatest thought in living is Heathcliff. If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be." Powerful, moving, dark at times, but still romantic - one of my all-time favorite books! It's a classic.

Jane Austen's book Emma is a classic must read. Great humor and it really looks into the minds of women and being matchmakers...Life lesson: You think you’re a great social force, but everyone’s just scared of you.
Emma, by Jane Austen. Even more than Pride and Prejudice, I think this is the greatest of Jane Austen's books; certainly the best story, and the best hero. (If Anne of Green Gables met Jane Austen, Mr. Darcy would be Anne's tall, dark, and brooding ideal, and Mr. Knightly would be Gilbert Blythe.)
Here's another ranking of Jane Austen's novels, but this one includes the rationale behind the choices.

Snow Falling on Cedars - David Guterson. I read this in March. Lovely, lyrical mystery that tackles big themes like unrequited love and casual racism.
Snow Falling on Cedars, David Guterson. Recommended by Sandi MacQuinn. A murder trial in a small town of San Pedro island in Puget Sound after WWII becomes a heart wrenching exploration of racism, presumption, the horrors of war and the tragedy of ill-fated love.
One of the pinners said: "I love the writing. Have read all of Guterson's books, but this is the best by far because the plot and action really keeps you interested. It has the perfect amount of drama, love, internal struggle, social/ interpersonal conflict, sociological and intellectual stimulation- i.e. questions about race and morality and loss, and beautiful prose in nature settings." - This is now definitely on my reading list.
Snow Falling on Cedars - David Guterson ★★★★★ // The story takes place on San Piedro Island off the coast of Washington State in 1954. A local fisherman is found suspiciously drowned, and Kabuo Miyamoto is charged with his murder. The trial acts as a framework for the story, which tells of wartime, internment of the Japanese-descended islanders, a secret love affair between a white boy and the Japanese girl who grew up to become Kabuo's wife; and land that was paid for and lost during the war.
another one of my favorites. Read the book twice and have seen the movie 3 times.

'Wind, Sand and Stars' - by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. He wrote of his 1935 plane crash in the Sahara Desert, which he barely survived along with his mechanic-navigator. They were left almost completely without water and food. The two men nearly died of thirst before being saved by a Bedouin on a camel.
