What can I possibly say about this book? It's one of the best stories and most well-written books ever. Bradbury, as always, relied heavily on his reader's information to fill in the gaps, and usually, I find that sloppy writing, but with this--with this story--it works; like a haunting nightmare hovering on the edge of your memory. Ah, great stories and fantastic writing make me swoon :D

Banned Books Week is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey and I am excited to be participating again! So I chose to read Fahrenheit 451. I read this many many years ago, and it was time to revisit this classic. What a perfect time to read a book not just about the banning of books, but the burning of them, and the banning of reading. It's ironic, but a sad irony, the kind you don't want to see. When life imitates art and not in a good way. Fahrenheit 451 is about a fireman - in this world, firemen set fire to books, their job it is to burn them, and the houses of any people who dare to have books in their homes. Guy Montag meets a young woman outside her home one night, and her kindness and curiosity awaken the curiosity of Guy. She makes him think, wonder. We later learn that Guy has another secret, a stash of books he has taken on the sly from homes he has burned. He ends up on the run from the government as he refuses to turn away from this new side of himself, and ultimately murders his boss. Guy makes it out of the city after a harrowing chase through the streets, pursued by the Electric Hound, and finds himself in a group of revolutionaries, self-exiled from the cities walking the rails, who read. It is a book about censorship, about whether the government should do the thinking for its people - for why should the people care or know anything about political candidates? - it's about people preserving knowledge for the future. I love the group that Montag is with in the very end, those fellow escapees committed to free thought and will, to the preservation of literature for future generations. Everyone has a book they are responsible for remembering, to hold onto until the time is right for the book to exist again. It always makes me wonder what book would I choose to be responsible for? What do I think is important enough, for whatever the reason, that I would try to keep it alive, waiting generations if necessary. I think that I may choose Watership Down, my favorite book. Fahrenheit 451 has been challenged for reasons of language and for religious reasons. It blows my mind that someone could read this book and not understand that they were just doing exactly what the book was trying to show was so wrong! That you are censoring a book about censorship? Maybe that is what is so scary, and what they really are guarding against. Knowledge that you don't have to just accept what is told to you, that you can think about it, form your own opinions. If you haven't read this, or haven't read it in a long time like me, I urge you to pick it up. It is a quick but powerful read, and what better time to read it?

Matilda, by Roald Dahl All Time Favorite Childhood Book!... all about a girl who reads. Go figure! ;)
Matilda by Roald Dahl. My favorite book when I was a child. I read it over and over and over and over...
Matilda by Roald Dahl An absolute childhood favorite. One of my many favorites by Dahl, it is the tale of a precocious girl who tries to teach the immature grown ups in her life important lessons.
I've read most of Roald Dahl's books, and they're all wonderful in different ways. My favorite, though, is "Boy"- the tales of his childhood.
I have always loved Roald Dahl's books for its remarkable creativity, engaging plot, and admirable characters. Matilda may have been the first Roald Dahl book I have read. It is a tale of how Matilda, an adorable, precocious child who was born into a mean, unintelligent family and attends a school with an evil headmistress, discovers a brilliant magical power that allows her to teach the unintelligent adults a lesson.
Childhood favorite! Matilda by Roald Dahl.

Laura Ingalls Wilder - (03) Farmer Boy
Laura Ingalls Wilder - (03) Farmer Boy - Free ebook download as PDF File (.pdf), Text File (.txt) or read book online for free. While Laura Ingalls grows up in a little house on the western prairie, Almanzo Wilder is living on a big farm in New York State. Almanzo and his brother and sisters work at their chores from dawn to supper most days–no matter what the weather. There is still time for fun, though, especially with the horses, which Almanzo loves more than anything. FARMER BOY is the third book in the Laura Years series.
My children and I took a little break from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie series last summer and fall, but as soon as we picked up Farmer Boy, I remembered why it's my favorite in the series. My children and I can really identify with Almanzo and the things he learns working on his father's farm. Here are some activities I came up with to go along with our reading: * Do a popcorn and milk experiment * Try an ice insulation experiment. * Dye some clothing or fabric using natural dyes. * Look at the cost of things in Farmer Boy. Can you compare them with prices today? How much would Almanzo's $200 be in today's money? * Eat some apples 'n onions. * Grow a milk fed pumpkin. * Make some apple turnovers. * Do some molasses candy pulling. * What could you enter into your area's fair? Start now on that project. * Set up a rain barrel. * Make some simple headcheese. * Make a whistle from a blade of grass. (Also.) * Whip up some watermelon rind preserves. * Tap some trees and make syrup. (More tips for tapping non-Maple trees here.) * Eat some birds' nest pudding. * Make some easy apple vinegar. (Instead of chopping up whole apples, you may use apple peels and scraps.) * Color some boy farmer pictures. * Make some watermelon rind pickles or green tomato pickles. * Watch a video of the Wilder farm. * Eat some blueberry pudding. * Make some Farmer Boy inspired doughnuts. * Read and learn about the Declaration of Independence. * Consider using this free Farmer Boy unit study, including crafts. (Here's another.) * Make a Farmer Boy lap book. (Or, try this one.) Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James
I was slightly obsessed reading this trilogy. I knew zero about it before I started but it was all over the Internet and blog-sphere that I gave it a go and when I did I seriously couldn't put it down. Some may think its a tad embarrassing to admit that they loved this book but the story really wasn't about the "erotica" for me. I loved the non stop drama, clever arguments between the two main characters and the suspense of each story line through the series. I would love to divulge into the story more but I also don't want to put out any spoilers out there for the people still reading the trilogy. To all the haters out there that said this was a mock of Twilight, I cant fight back. I have never read or seen any of the Twilight Trilogy. I also never read Hunger Games - GASP! Vampires and futuristic styles are not for this gal. I enjoyed this book simply because it was an easy read, a peak into the world of the rich and in each chapter I was left wanting to know what happens next can't things just be as simple as that. Why do we over analyze everything to pieces??? Perhaps the writing was a bit lackluster for descriptions of wardrobe and sometimes repetitive but it was purely entertaining. Since this story has been featured everywhere lately, naturally talks about it becoming a movie (Universal supposedly paid $5 million for the rights) are already in the works. I however can't decide if it would be better fitted for the big screen or a television serious like SATC on HBO. I almost prefer the series just because it can be extended to leave nothing from the trilogy out as what takes place in most book-movie adaptations. Every chapter could be an episode leaving us on cliffhangers each week! But seriously the most important part is who would play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, never-mind the rest of the cast??? Or even better - who would play Mrs. Robinson! these are my picks - who are yours??? Ryan Gosling - OBVI choice for Mr. Christian Grey Lilly Collins - Gorgeous & innocent looking - perfect for Anastasia Steele Ellen Barkin as Mrs. Robinson Jay Hernandez as Jose Shantel Vansanten as Kate Amanda Segrfied as Leila Wentworth Miller as Elliot The Trilogy

Do you have Junior Book Buffs at home? Trying to raise a good solid reader? Me too, and I stumbled upon an awesome list to arm you with some great material to get your child reading. The folks over at Scholastic have put together a great list of what they believe to be the 100 Greatest Books for Children. It's a really cool page, you can also search the list by age to effectively find exactly what you are looking for. Some of my childhood favorites made the list: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein Who doesn't love a good story about a suicidal tree? The Giver by Lois Lowry My intro to dystopian literature, and I never looked back! (Check out my Giver post here) The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis Still a favorite I enjoy re-reading to this day. The White Witch still freaks the crap out of me! How about you? See if your favorite made the list: http://www.scholastic.com/100books/ Don't see your favorite book on the list? Maybe it made the "15 Books that Almost Made the List" list. Here are some of my favorites from that list: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee I understand why this one didn't make it. Yes, I believe it to be one of the absolute greatest and most important books of all time, but it isn't a kid's book. In fact I find it a bit odd that it was even considered for the list. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl As a kid I always felt Roald Dahl was a kindred spirit, good-natured and happy, but still a tad twisted :) The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien See commentary on To Kill a Mockingbird, p.s. who is getting pumped for the new movie!?! *raises hand enthusiastically* The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss One word describes my opinion on the fact that this book was left off of the list: travesty. “For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die.” Anne Lamott
