    Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (natively: mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva River. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most recognizable landmarks, and is considered one of the most exemplary pieces of Islamic architecture in the Balkans.

Photo: Kevin Botto / The Stari Most Bridge (''Old Bridge''), Bosnia, was originally built in 1566 during the height of the Ottoman Empire. It evolved into the heart of the city of Mostar, joining Bosnia & Herzegovina. The original arch of the bridge was built using a local stone called tenelija. The Old Bridge stood for 427 years, but in the Croat-Bosniak War (1993) it was hit & fell into the river. It was rebuilt in 2004 with some of the original stones recovered from the river by divers
