When the Civil War began,Isham Warren Garrott formed the 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment, serving as its colonel. Battle Flag of the 2nd North Carolina Infantry Regiment. The Regiment was with Rodes' Divivsion at Gettysburg when it moved into town on the first day, July 1, 1863. After fighting on Oak Hill it engaged a rear guard Pennsylvania regiment while the Federals were retreating through town and it's flag was captured in heavy fighting in the town.
