"San Antonio Fiesta". We celebrate Fiesta to honor the people of the Alamo and San Jacinto, whom fought for our freedom from Mexico. We gain our Independence and became the Republic of Texas (we did not join the U.S. till later)
In 1891, a group of ladies decorated horse-drawn carriages, paraded in front of the Alamo, and pelted each other with flower blossoms. The parade was organized to honor the heroes from the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto. From this humble beginning was born Fiesta San Antonio, an eleven-day citywide party. The parade known as the Battle of the Flowers is still one of the most popular events.
