Divorce Records in the States | Genealogy, Ancestry, and Family Tree Research| Like any of the vital records a family historian needs, such as birth-marriage and death records, one that can also be important are any divorce records. Since it is a civil matter to be officially divorced from a spouse, there have been official governmental documents.

Before the first recorded census there was the 1783 tax record, in some states. Then comes the 1789 tax record, again only in some states. Many of Virginia's early records were burned by the British. A real issue for a genealogist! ;p
