Using Instagram to grow your small business || Brim Papery

Today I met with a few small business owners from around Columbus (see their shops here, here, here, here, and here!) and we talked about the best ways to market yourself. I shared a lot about my own love affair with Instagram, and thought I'd take the time to jot down what I found to be the best lessons I've learned since opening my account. Work The Room Think of Instagram as one big house party. Are you more likely to warm up to a person in the corner of the room with their nose in a book, or the person who shows interest in you, seems friendly and sociable and starts a conversation with you? Of course, the latter! Get yourself out there by being friendly to your followers and introducing yourself to new friends. When people leave a comment, respond kindly to them. When you see something you like on someone else’s account, leave comments for them and like their photos. Interacting on your business account brings out the person behind your business. I have done introductions posts before where I share some personal things about myself and ask to hear from my followers – not only do I love to meet them and learn more about them (it’s so fun!) but they love to get the chance to feel known, too. Be Genuine With that being said, be genuine, not fake for the sake of pushing yourself upward. Don’t follow 50 people in one day and randomly like their photos just to be seen, or (worse) comment on their photos with a beggy, “Follow my shop please?” (NOPE!) Find people to follow that genuinely interest you, and comment on things when you truly feel compelled to. A kind and genuine spirit will take you much further than a pushy and greedy one. Your Photos Matter Think about the shops or companies that you admire most and want to buy from. For me, it’s places like Anthropologie and Rifle Paper Co. If you can’t imagine them posting a blurry and off-centered photo on their website, why would you post it on yours? In other words, if you want to be at the level of the big leagues, you need to put yourself on their level with how you present yourself to the public. When a new person comes to your feed, all they have to judge your business by is your photos. You want to make sure they show off the best of you, not the worst. What can you show photos of? For starters, your products! Shoot them on a simple background, preferably next to a window to get lots of bright, natural light. The brighter and crisper the photo, the better. Use apps like Afterlight to brighten them up or use a filter to give them a really polished and professional look. Take a look at how other people are staging their photos and what works to take your pictures to the next level. You don’t need a fancy DSLR, photoshop, or a lightbox for all of this. I shoot all of my product photos on our wood floor with my iPhone! Customers also love to see behind the scenes of business and feel like they get a special sneak peek into how things work for you. Shots of you packaging, working on an order, a new product your experimenting with, or your workspace help round out who you are behind the business name. Still, make sure these photos are professional and appealing. Even photos that I post that seem off the cuff were typically arranged and edited to make sure they were top quality. Keep It Classy People are following your business account for your business. So it goes without saying that if they have to scroll through twelve pictures of your dog, your baby, and your breakfast they may lose interest fast – to cut to the chase, not everyone cares about you, they are on your business account to hear more about your business. (This is my main argument for why you should absolutely have a business account separate from your personal account, if you don't already! While I'm sure you're a wonderful person, you want to sell your business, not yourself!) That’s not to say you shouldn’t share any parts of your personal life (you should!) but make sure to find a balance. Keep your posts light in nature – nobody is excited or inspired by seeing emo posts about how hard of a day you've had, so try and keep those for your personal account. (Again, not to say you can't ever have a bad day or even share that with your followers, but use your best judgment.) Use Your Resources While I haven’t delved into the world of hashtags fully, they are a great way to help get your photos into the hands of people with whom you otherwise would never have contact. Hashtags are sort of like one giant filing system for instagram. If you put the hashtag #babyleggings on a photo of some baby leggings you sewed, then when someone searches for that hashtag, your photo will show up in that search (along with any other photos with that hashtag). So, the more hashtags you use, the more chances your feed will get picked up by anyone searching for those key words. Careful, though. Getting too hashtag crazy can be a bit of a turn off, so keep your hashtags concise and effective. Give To Get Even though great photos and a good heart will take you far on Instagram, chances are you’re always going to be looking to grow your following and your business. That’s where a giveaway comes in handy. If you’re new to Instagram or blog marketing, a giveaway goes like this: you offer your current fan base a chance to win a prize in exchange for them spreading the word about your shop. For the most part, shops usually post a picture of the prize (see above instructions for classy pictures) and have anyone who wants to enter repost that picture onto their own account with a hashtag (for example, #brimgiveaway) or a tag to the site (@brimpapery) Some thoughts on giveaways: 1. Think about what prize and picture would inspire YOU to actually repost and enter. (Often times I've started a promotional photo and then thought, you know? This isn't that pretty and I probably wouldn't share it if it were me.) Don’t skimp on a prize, or people won’t bite. 2. Don’t make your picture fugly with too much writing. It’s popular now to have a photo with all this writing all over it “Brim Papery @brimpapery Giveaway! Hashtag! Repost! Share!” and that can start to look really busy or tacky. (But if you want to put a little text on your photos, use something like the apps "Over" or "A Beautiful Mess") 3. You don’t have to take a photo of the prize. It could be a $50 gift card to your shop, and your followers can post their favorite product from your shop to enter. Sometimes people like to have a choice in what they post on their account. 4. Some people have private accounts and this is frustrating for giveaways. I no longer allow private posters to enter my giveaways, but if you’d like to, you can have them comment if they posted so you can keep track of them. 5. Make sure you use either a hashtag (so that you can click on that hashtag and see all the entries in one place) or have everyone leave a comment that they have entered. 6. One other option instead of having people repost your picture is to have people tag a friend in the comments of your photo to enter. No repost necessary, but all of their friends get to see the picture they were tagged in and maybe gain interest in you! 7. You can allow people extra entries by sharing about your shop on facebook, twitter, etc. and leaving a comment that they shared! 8. Ultimately, try and keep your giveaway as clear, to the point and simple as possible. The more steps and stipulations the faster you lose interest. Insta-Sales Since Instagram is my favorite form of marketing, I love to offer my Instagram followers special deals. This is not only a great bonus for them, but also gives me a little more standing ground to retain my followers since they know they could be getting a good discount or flash sale they wouldn’t see otherwise on Twitter or Facebook. (I value Instagram over these other social media platforms because what I do is so visual.) I often discount sell old items I want to get rid of or even offer little flash sales here and there just for my customers. This is a fun way to keep your fans sticking around. Anything I missed?
