Although totem poles have become a symbol of all Northwest Coast Native people and their use has spread to neighboring tribes through the years, tall multiple-figure poles were first made only by the northern Northwest Coast Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian peoples in Southeast Alaska and British Columbia.
Alaska - lived, worked, fished, skied, back country back pack, road trip, plane trip, hung out with homestead cabin folks, painted, admired and was overwhelmed, injured and healed by this state. Spent time in Bristol Bay, Naknek, Kuparak, Anchorage, Talkeetna, Homer etc. in every season - a place where dumb people don't last very long, unless they are commuting in from Texas. ;)
