Okay, my first official week of summer is over, and I had a blast! I decided to take a mini-break from all things teaching (including blogging), and I had lots of fun just being a mommy for a while! Miss Elliotte and I went to the childrens' museum, story hour at the library, played in her baby pool, and just hung out! We also tried some pinterest-inspired activities, and I have to say, we both loved the kool-aid playdough and edible fingerpaints! (well, we liked playing with them--we didn't actually eat them--I'm not that fun of a mom!) The links for them are below if you're interested. I might try them with my firsties this year, too! Source: dealiciousmom.com via Brooke on Pinterest Source: ourbestbites.com via Brooke on Pinterest I guess all that fun time playing gave me some new creativity because I just cannot stop thinking about things for next school year! This is what I just finished today, and I'm very excited to share it with you! I normally have my kiddos do an All About Me Bag as a community-builder for back to school, and I finally came up with a way to snazz it up a bit (other than the usual magazine collages)! Introducing, the All About Me Paper "Bagpack!" It has questions for the kiddos to fill out on the back, and they will put small items such as toys and photos that represent them inside the bag. I'm also thinking about having them draw self portraits--maybe Flat Stanley-style--to put in the little front pocket. We'll share our bags during one of our class meetings, and then we'll display them for Back to School Night! I'm so excited I won't have to scramble for a last minute idea for that this year! Yay! If you'd like to check it out, just click the pictures! Oh, and if you are one of the first two people to comment with your email, I'll send it to you for free! I hear Miss E is waking up from her nap, so its baby pool time for us! Have a great rest of the day!

jf~ CUTE idea for first day/week of school.... Students must find 20 adjectives that describe themselves.--Good first day of school activity to get to know students
Students must find 20 adjectives that describe themselves. Great self-esteem or 'get to know you' lesson. Could also have each student in the classroom write an adjective about each student?
Students must find 20 adjectives that describe themselves. Good first day of school activity to get to know students. It is a good activity to build relationships at the same time as allowing evaluation of their language arts skills. This way students can also see what they have in common or get to know each other better as well.
Students must find 20 adjectives that describe themselves. Great self-esteem or 'get to know you' lesson
Cute idea! Students must find 20 adjectives (in Spanish, of course) that describe themselves.. Then, take their picture.

Wow, I really can't believe that school starts on Monday - the start of my 10th year of teaching! This past week was filled with inducting our new teammates, a couple of short meetings, some good PD on RTI and co-teaching, lot's of prep, and meet-the-teacher night! I'm kind of proud of this sign I made to hang in my window. The lighting wasn't ideal, but it says: Orange you glad to be in 5th grade! I made a few changes to my classroom. You'll notice something a bit different about my tables. If you were following me last year I posted about putting contact paper on my tables. The main reason I did this was so that my tables would match; I had a few different styles of tables, and the contact paper gave it a cleaner, more cohesive look. As I was removing the contact paper from last year the custodian came in and said that one of our teachers was switching from tables to desks and could get me MATCHING tables! I was thrilled. I was even more thrilled that none of them were loose and creaky (this drove us mad last year). These tables are also a bit longer and so the kiddos will have a bit more room. I don't know how I got it in my head that I wanted plants on each table (could I have possibly had an original idea and not something seen on Pinterest?!?!). Don't they look lovely! When they are in our way there is plenty of room on the window sill. Plus, they were cheap! Ikea pots = $.50 each, Ikea placemats = $.99 for 4, and 99 cent store plants = $.99. Last year my tables were continents. When I taught 6th grade my tables were the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. I wanted something more creative this year, but inspiration has yet to strike. For now they are just color coded. I love these FREE frames from Ashley Hughes. I now have more room in the back, although you can't tell in the photo, to meet for Reading/Writing Workshop. You can see my book boxes on the shelf. I wish I had taken a photo because I added numbers from the lovely Ladybug's Teaching Files, and they look great! I used her FREE labels for the boxes and their Reader's Notebooks. Meet-the-teacher night went great! Most of my new 5th graders stopped by and it was great to meet all of the wonderful families I will be working with this year. It was also great to see some of my class from last year. I still need to finish scripting out week one, but I'm really excited for Monday! Don't forget to join in on my Pinterest Top 10 for Next School Year Linky Party! You have until the end of the month to join in!

Sign for my future classroom :)
You may have seen the picture of my "4S Line" poster floating around Pinterest. I posted it here back in September of 2010 after moving in to my new classroom and suddenly realizing that a sign posted near my lineup area might remind students of the school-wide "4S" expectation- that lines be straight, silent, still, and smiling. Last year I was contacted by someone at Frog Street Press looking for the origin of the 4S Line to recognize them as inspiration for a new product. I told her that I made the poster but that my principal got the idea from a conference several years ago. Frog Street added a 5th "S" to turn the list into a rhyming poem and printed it upon a handy vertically hanging chart. I said that I would love to see the product when finished and even though I can't take credit for the concept, they were nice enough to mail me the Classroom Management Ready Reminders pack that I've decided to give away on Adventures of an Art Teacher! Code for free shipping at Frog Street Press- FLSHREADY The set includes the 5S Style chart as well as Seat Signals and School is Through, What do you do? These are more geared toward classroom teachers but I think 2 of the 3 could be used in an Art room as well. To be entered in the give away, just comment here with your name and favorite color (just because I can) by Friday, August 9th. I will use a random number generator to select a winner on Saturday morning. Sorry, US addresses only (the package is rather long and I don't know how much shipping will be). Make sure that I can either find your email via your Blogger ID or that you check back to see if you're the winner so I can get your address. You don't have to follow my blog to win, but it would be nice of you if you find anything useful here. :) Let's review. To enter.... Comment on this post by 11:59 PM on Friday, August 10th Include your favorite color Live in the United States Make sure I can contact you through Blogger or check back to see if you won That's it! Good luck, and happy school year. *I've not been compensated for this post, just thought it was nifty and wanted to share.

I like the phrasing here: peacemakers vs. peacebreakers (as opposed to "on task" and "off task." but I would rather use Bucket filler and bucket dipper because I can use the book : Have you filled a bucket today?
Thinking...Bucket Filler or Bucket Dipper (Peacemaker or Peacebreaker~ I can hear myself asking a student, "Which one do you want to be, a peaceMaker or a peaceBreaker?" Love this idea!"

Jenn S-This is a really good first day of school activity because it helps the teacher see what the students want in a teacher. The students will feel like they have a voice in the classroom and the teacher will know what the students want to see.
Start of the year activity and then do what do you think a teacher wants in a student. Gives everyone an idea of expectations.
Beginning of Year Activity - a good extension might be... What kind of student/friend do you want in your class? Then draw some parallels between teacher/student expectations.
First Day of School Activity. I'd follow it with a "what kind of student do teachers want?" brainstorm to get the message of a mutual expectation across.
What kind of teacher do you want? Read this with "Miss Nelson Is Missing!!" :) Good first day of school activity.
