Made of pierced water buffalo skin, with a painted bird resembling a peacock at the center in gold and white, and gold scrolls around the border. Decoration is the same on both sides. An 1840s fan. Fans were used throughout the nineteenth century, but the specific, elaborate code of motions and meanings sometimes associated with the Victorians was driven by a fan-maker's marketing and developed later than my novel's period.
