On this day in 1947, a meteorite estimated to be about 30 tons impacted in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains of eastern Siberia around 10:30am not from from the settlement of Luchegorsk. The meteorite actually broke up pre-impact with a violent explosion at an altitude of 3.5 miles and the impact itself was heard and seen over a radius of about 190 miles.
