Forest Paths by ajn elemans: "The Ents loved the great trees; and the wild woods, and the slopes of the high hills; and they drank of the mountain-streams, and ate only such fruit as the trees let fall in their path; and they learned of the Elves and spoke with the Trees." —J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers, Book 2, Chapter 4. #Forest #Photography #Tolkien

"The Mother of the Forest" was an ancient and huge Giant Sequoia. 321 ft tall, 90ft at ground-level, 2,520 years old, and covered in bark 2 ft thick, the tree was stripped in 1852 by its discoverer George Gale and quickly perished. Its fire-blackened snag, over 100 ft tall, still stands today in Calaveras, CA.
