[March, 2012 UPDATE] – I noticed that since I’ve been using this homemade powder laundry detergent, my washing machine does not get mildew-y as fast. I read that liquid detergent coats the surface and makes it attract more lint and mildew. May be that’s the reason but since I’ve been using the powder detergent, my washing machine hasn’t been as dirty or mildew-y. More reason why I love my homemade powder detergent formula!

You know you should be cleaning your washing machine but are you stumped on the best method? Here's How to Naturally Clean Any Washing Machine via Clean Mama

Adding vinegar is easy peasy. So nice of you to let everyone know about it. I have a gallon of vinegar just for the laundry room, then add essential oils to it. Shake well each time before adding it as softener or to clean the washer. The vinegar smell changes to a lovely essential oil scent fest.

Cleaning and maintaining a front load washer - explains a LOT if you have that "mold/mildew" smell to your towels/clothes.

I have one of these washers, 13 years later still is an issue! I put about 1/4 to 1/2 of vinegar in just about every load. Sad that we have to spend so much time cleaning our washing machine! The mold on the rubber gaskets is gross, but I have used a Dremel to get it off!

Admit it....your towels stink sometimes! Great post on how to freshen your towels and remove that mildew stink!

Clean your front loader!! Takes away the mildew smell. I had known the 2nd part of this process not the first. I went & did it immediately. Very cool to know for my front loader!

TIP: use HE powder laundry detergent then you won't have to contend with the smell

Well, it's probably true about the type of detergent but once in a great while the detergent wouldn't dissolve and it ruined some things. I have a front loader now and use only liquid. Never had a problem with it (yet, anyway).

I only use HE powder in my front loader now because the build up from using liquid detergents caused the smell to be horrible.. The slime in the seals is from the liquid detergents. My front loader is 5-7 yrs old so I'd like to think the manufacturers made some improvements over those years!!

I use Method liquid now and don't have a smell problem since using it but I have learned to leave the door open so the inside dries out.....I live in So Oregon where mold grows rampant in the winter time,

Great Tutorial for cleaning the drain pump. Moving into a new home I never read the manuals from cover to cover so in 5 1/2 years I never cleaned it. I found $1.00 in change and a few hair clips. My husband was amazed that I figured out how to do that!
