"FOLDs" ... A beautiful installation by David Mesguich and Valentin Van der Meulen that first appeared in 2009 at Maison des Arts de Malakoff, and again in 2010 at Art Paris 2010. The piece is made from numerous polypropylene shapes and creates a somewhat haunting anatomical amalgam of face and skull.
This faceted skull called Folds was created by David Mesguich and painted by Valentin Van der Meulen
“Folds” is a sculpture made from polypropylene by David Mesguich and Valentin Van der Meulen. Below: “Border line,” made with epoxy resin by Mesguich.

France-based artists David Mesguich and Valentin Van der Meulen combined their creative efforts to construct this large triple-headed sculpture known as FOLDS. The structure, made of polypropylene, presents an interesting image of a series of three-dimensional, geometric, bodiless heads. It seems like two halves of a face pulling away from a centered skull. There is a remarkable sensation of animated movement in this stationary sculpture that makes it an anomaly.

Ed Fairburn- Click to enlarge. Ink on reproduced military maps of the Western Front (WWI) with additional ink and paper cuts by partner and printmaker Bobbie-Jo. Climate charts of North America allow dashes of colour to emerge through the cuts. The portraits have been framed in such a way to show a depth between each layer; this gap is visible in the above images.
Western Front Cutout by Ed Fairburn Illustration graduate whose work is mostly figurative. Recent explorations have involved synchronising pre-patterned surfaces (such as maps) with the structures and textures found within the human figure. “Like a sculptor carving a subject from a block of stone, or a constellation highlighted in a clump of stars, Fairburn uses meticulous ink or pencil cross-hatching to create portraits hidden amongst the topographical features”

This cutout, layered map portrait is part of a recent series from this UK artist, who says "The idea of harmonizing a portrait with a map suggests that we are a product of the landscape." Underneath are North America climate charts, and the map on top is an old military map from World War II.

Harold Fisk: Alluvial maps of the Lower Mississippi River Valley for the Army Corps of Engineers, 1944
Alluvial Valley of the Lower Mississippi River (1944) by Harold Fisk. Part of an otherwise technocratic report for the Army Corps of Engineers, Fisk’s fifteen maps of the historical traces of the Mississippi River are a triumph of information aesthetics.
The collection of maps were made in 1944 by Harold N. Fisk, who tracked in a rainbow of colours the path of past and present flows as the Mississippi river changed course and flooded over time. http://www.radicalcartography.net/?fisk
Harold Fisk Mississippi River Maps from Army Corps of Engineers http://lmvmapping.erdc.usace.army.mil/ linked from Radical Cartography website
One section of the Harold Fisk map of the Mississippi River. The Fisk map, made in 1944 for the Army Corps of Engineers, traces the various routes taken by the river over time. This image is one of several maps, all of which can be viewed at http://www.radicalcartography.net/?fisk - many thanks to Andrew Kudless, whose lecture at UMN included this as a starting point, for setting me on its trail. #MississippiRiver
We often think of rivers as following a given path for the course of its life, but really, the path changes over time as the flow cuts into the earth. The water flows through old and new and back again. In 1944, cartographer Harold Fisk mapped the current Mississippi River. It's the white trail. Then Fisk used old geological maps to display old paths. They're the old colored paths. And what you get is this long run of windy, snake-like things. [Twisted History | Thanks, Michael]
