Cheese Straws are a favorite British nibble and canapé year-round, but especially welcome at Christmas and New Year's parties. The first recorded recipe is in 'Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management' published in 1861. They are savory, crisp and easy to make: lard, butter, flour, cheese and a spice such as nutmeg or Cayenne pepper. There are many different recipes today.
