Xerces Blue Butterfly, an extinct species of butterfly in the gossamer-winged butterfly family, Lycaenidae, once lived in coastal sand dunes of the Sunset District of San Francisco and is believed to be the first American butterfly species to become extinct as a result of loss of habitat caused by urban development. This is what prompted the creation of the Xerces Society, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of invertebrate species and their habitats.
