Johnny Cash was an American singer-songwriter, actor, and author who was considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Although he is primarily remembered as a country icon, his songs and sound spanned other genres including rock and roll and rockabilly —especially early in his career—and blues, folk, and gospel. This crossover appeal won Cash the rare honor of induction in the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Fire escape collapse, 1975. This photo, taken by Stanley Forman, is officially titled “Fire Escape Collapse“. 19-year-old Diana Bryant and her 2-year-old goddaughter Tiare Jones falling from the collapsed fire escape of a burning apartment on Marlborough Street in Boston. Bryant died from her injuries, but Jones survived the fall, which was softened by her landing on Bryant’s body.

Photography by Stanley Forman - Diana Bryant and Tiare Jones fall from the collapsing fire escape. (1975) On July 22, 1975 in Boston, a 19-year-old and her 2-year-old goddaughter were trapped in a burning building. A firefighter, Robert O’Neill, shielded them from the flames as a fire ladder inched closer. Then the fire escape collapsed. Although the woman died from her injuries, the infant survived.
Fire on Marlborough Street 22 Jul 1975 photographer Stanley J. Forman of the Boston Herald American newspaper Diana Bryant, and a very young girl, Tiare Jones fell helplessly. Bryant pronounced dead at the scene. The young girl lived. Photo coverage from the tragic event garnered Stanley Forman a Pulitzer Prize. But more important, his work paved the way for Boston and other states to mandate tougher fire safety codes.
On July 22, 1975, photograph Stanley Forman working for the Boston Herald newspaper when a police scanner picked up an emergency: “Fire on Marlborough Street!” Climbed on a the fire truck, Forman shot the picture of a young woman, Diana Bryant, and a very young girl, Tiare Jones when they fell helplessly. Diana Bryant was pronounced dead at the scene. His work paved the way for Boston and other states to mandate tougher fire safety codes.
19-year-old Diana Bryant and her two-year-old goddaughter Tiare Jones falling from a broken fire escape during an apartment house fire in Boston, Massachusetts. (Stanley Forman, 1975) The media was charged with invading the privacy of Diana Bryant, who died as a result of the fall, and pandering to sensationalism. Two-year-old Tiare lived. But, the picture also prompted officials in Boston to rewrite its laws regarding fire escape safety.
https://flic.kr/p/8BMPUP | Boston Fire | 1976 Pulitzer Prize, Spot News Photography, Stanley J. Forman, Boston Herald American It's quitting time on a brutally hot day in July when Boston Herald American photographer Stanley Forman hears a report of a fire in Boston’s Back Bay. He follows screaming fire trucks to a six-story apartment house in flames. Forman remembers "a roaring, roaring inferno... heavy smoke. Heavy fire. It was like a firestorm." Forman runs to the back of the building. "Then I spotted them. A woman, a child and they re standing there on the fire escape, 10 feet from the fire itself. And they're looking for help." As Forman watches, a firefighter climbs down from the roof. He pulls them away from the flames, shielding them with his heavy rubber coat. Seeking a better vantage point, Forman climbs onto a ladder truck. "Everything was fine," says Forman. "I was just shooting a routine rescue. Switching lenses, switching cameras." A ladder rises slowly toward the fire escape. The firefighter reaches out to grab the ladder.... "All of a sudden, boom! It just crashes." As Forman watches, the fire escape rips away from the building. The woman is falling, the child is falling, metal is flying... "Everything is falling and I'm thinking. Just keep shooting.' And I'm shooting and shooting. Then a bell went off in my head. I didn’t want to see them hit." Forman turns away. When he turns back, he discovers the 19-year-old woman is dead. Her 3-year-old niece miraculous survives.
