"Some people live to eat, just the animals do 'whose life is no more than filling their stomachs.' But our Teacher exhorts us to eat in order to live. Nourishment is not what we are here for, nor is pleasure our purpose in life. We only use them during our sojourning here as the Word instructs us, and he chooses our nourishment with immortality in view." Clement of Alexandria, quoted in Drinking from the Hidden Fountain: a Patristic Breviary, Ancient Wisdom for Today’s World by Thomas Spidlik (Kalamazoo, Mich.: Cistercian Publications, 1993) [image: Valeria Heine]

The Seeker. This archetype refers to one who searches on a path that may begin with earthly curiosity but has at its core the search for God and/or enlightenment. Unlike the Mystic, which has the Divine as its sole focus, the Seeker is in search of wisdom and truth wherever it is to be found. The shadow side of the archetype is the "lost soul," someone on an aimless journey without direction, ungrounded, disconnected from goals and others.-Carolyn Myss
