Lois Lowry - "The Giver" one of my favorite books when I was younger, but I hate that the ending wasn't clear!!
A thought-provoking young adult dystopia. I wish I had read it as a young adult. I loved it.
This is one of my all time FAVORITE Books!!! I can't wait to read it with my kids :)

-READ- “Although there are those who wish to ban my books because I have used language that is painful, I have chosen to use the language that was spoken during the period, for I refuse to whitewash history. The language was painful and life was painful for many African Americans, including my family. I remember the pain.” ― Mildred D. Taylor
Overview "The vivid story of a black family whose warm ties to each other and their land give them strength to defy rural Southern racism during the Depression. . . . Entirely through its own internal development, the novel shows the rich inner rewards of black pride, love, and independence despite the certainty of outer defeat." —Booklist (starred review)
About a black family living in Mississippi during the 1930's. Definitely will read with the kids, but probably wait till they're older.
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. One of my favorite books for almost 30 years. Vivid, compelling, powerful, and 100% deserving of the numerous awards bestowed upon it.

The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup and a Spool of Thread by Kate DiCamillo Our favorite book of 2013!
The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. Third favorite book of all time, I've lost track of how many times I've read it. Very unique, and as a book lover, I can't name one book which is like it.
The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup and a Spool of Thread by Kate DiCamillo. This is seriously one of the most adorable little kid books I've ever read. A favorite :D
The Tale of Despereaux My kids and I LOVED this book! I like children's books written like they can handle some depth. Kate DiCamillo does not treat kids like they are dummies and I think that sets her apart. My kids were about ages 4-9 and they all adored this book. A game changer. An all-time-fave!
The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo Despereaux Tilling was born with his eyes open, a very strange way for a mouse to come into this world. Things get stranger as he behaves in un-mouse like ways, for one.. falling in love with a human princess. This is also a story about a dungeon, a rat named Roscuro, and a girl named Miggery Sow. This (sometimes twisted/dark) fairy tale is very engaging and does well as a read aloud (currently reading to my 3rd graders!).
The Tale of Despereaux. Perfect read aloud chapter book for children.
One of my favorite childrens' books. So much better than the movie.

As further evidence of his family's bad fortune which they attribute to a curse on a distant relative, Stanley Yelnats is sent to a hellish correctional camp in the Texas desert where he finds his first real friend, a treasure, and a new sense of himself.
OK I know this is a kid's book but who didn't LOVE this book? It's one of my top ten favorite books in the entire universe! It was funny, serious, and dealt with a lot of sensitive topics. I give it an 85. Also, the movie was awesome and very close to the book!
Holes, Louis Sachar - who cares if it's a kids book - love this little knot of stories that finally unravels into one neat tale.

Jeffrey Lionel "Maniac" Magee might have lived a normal life if a trolley accident hadn't made him an orphan. After living with his unhappy and uptight aunt and uncle for eight years, he decides to run-and not just run away, but run. And this is where the myth of Maniac Magee begins, as he changes the lives of a racially divided small town with his amazing and legendary feats.

Maniac Magee...read it with my class when I taught 5th grade and it quickly became one of my favorites. It may be for "young adults" but the life lessons apply to everyone
Maniac Magee has adult themes mixed with youthful comedy in a great read aloud-my 6th graders loved it, and so do I!
“Nobody knows who said it first, but somebody must have: 'Kid's gotta be a maniac.” ― Jerry Spinelli, Maniac Magee
Maniac Magee is a folk story about a boy, a very excitable boy. One that can outrun dogs, hit a home run off the best pitcher in the neighborhood, tie a knot no one can undo. "Kid's gotta be a maniac," is what the folks in Two Mills say. It's also the story of how this boy, Jeffrey Lionel "Maniac" Magee, confronts racism in a small town, tries to find a home where there is none and attempts to soothe tensions between rival factions on the tough side of town.
Read this is Mrs. Reisenbigler's 5th grade class and it has been a favorite ever since!
just a great, fun book geared for kids. Highly recommend it for boys and girls alike.
