A PAINTED WOOD FAYUM PORTRAIT OF A MAN   roman period, circa 80-140 a.d.   Painted on a wooden panel in the encaustic technique, the panel itself dressed in antiquity in order to accommodate it to the mummy, the portrait that of a moustached and bearded man with short curly hair, the head strongly turned to one side, the eyes looking directly forward, depicted wearing a white chiton with red clavi, over which is worn a mantle  15¼ in. (38.8 cm) high
