How is it that the Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde could create a cloud in a room? I can’t tell you, the artist defies categorisation let alone an explanation. Often drawing on a nebulous concept of the “physical presence of transitional spaces,” on one hand Nimbus and Cumulus – the former appearing in the online gallery Probe, the latter (pictured) was visible for mere minutes at HMK {Hotel MariaKapel} earlier this month) are sculptural; no matter how vague

Nimbus - The cloud inside this room is real - These stunning photos of indoor clouds might look like digital creations, but they're actually of real scenes created by Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde who has generated them using a smoke machine. Smilde monitors a room's humidity and atmosphere in order to get the smoke to hang so elegantly, and with such life-like form. Backlighting is used to bring out shadows from within the cloud, to give it that look of a looming and ominous rain cloud.

Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde makes real clouds form inside of empty rooms! He uses a fog machine and carefully adjusts the temperature and humidity to produce clouds just long enough to photograph.
