Gertrude Stein, 1913, by Alvin Langdon Coburn. Gertrude Stein (Feb 3, 1874–July 27, 1946) was an American writer of novels, poetry and plays that eschewed the narrative, linear, and temporal conventions of 19th-century literature, and a fervent collector of Modernist art. Henri Matisse (1869-1954) started painting in 1889, and exclusively after 1891, initially painting in traditional style. In 1898 he travelled to Corsica, inspired by light and color. In Paris he studied the work of the Greats. In 1904 he experimented with pointillism. In 1905, Matisse began to use broader brushstrokes and expressive colors. In 1917 Matisse moved to Nice. For some ten years his work became more tempered and ‘classical’. Confined to a wheelchair in 1941, he did decoupage.

What an interesting child. Look at the intensity of her eyes. I think she wanted to be taking pictures, not to be "taken."

A camera girl - in 2014 she would call herself "a photographer" who said you need education or training. After all the camera's are so good now. You don't need to spend ten thousands on equipment anymore, $500 is enough.
