Retablos probably have their origins with the Christian knights of the Crusades and the Spanish reconquista.  Since the Christian warriors were frequently far   away from their home churches, they carried small box altars that they used for worship and protection against the enemy.      The earliest versions of retablos   generally featured religious themes.
