Frederick Sleigh Roberts, oil on canvas by John Singer Sargent. Born in Italy to American parents, Sargent combined Victorian ideals with impressionistic style for portraits that were recognized for their immediacy, emotional depth and refined technique. Done in 1906, when the Earl Roberts was 76 years old, he is portrayed at the end of his brilliant career in his Field Marshal's uniform. The portrait resides in the National Portrait Gallery.
