Cicely Tyson was the 1st "Negro" actress on TV not playing a maid.She was in a TV series with a very famous actor (whose name I can't of course remember) filmed on the strs. of NY. She shocked,I mean SHOCKED the country, because SHE WAS the 1st black women to not have straightened hair AND had an afro & a very short afro! NO ONE HAD SEEN THIS BEFORE. Cathay Williams - Became the first and the only known female Buffalo Soldier. Enlisting in the US Regular Army 1866 at St. Louis, Missouri for a three year engagement, passing herself off as a man. She is the first African American female to enlist, and the only documented to serve in the United States Army posing as a man under the pseudonym, William Cathay.

Here is a Georgia State Trooper in riot gear at a KKK protest in a north Georgia city back in the 80s. The Trooper is black. Standing in front of him and touching his shield is a curious little boy dressed in a Klan hood and robe. I have stared at this picture and wondered what must have been going through that Trooper’s mind. Before the Trooper is an innocent child who is being taught to hate him because of the color of his skin.

Mary Bethune lifted herself from the cotton field to the White House as an adviser to the President of the United States. Her greatest accomplishment, however, was almost single-handily building Bethune-Cookman College in 1923.
Victoria Woodhull (1838 - 1927). She was quite a lady ... the first woman to run for President of the United States (1872); first woman to start a weekly newspaper, first woman along with her sister to operate a brokerage firm in Wall Street (where she made a fortune). She fought for women's rights, against corruption and for labor reforms. The reforms and ideals espoused by her for the common working class against the corrupt rich business elite were extremely controversial in her time.
